Very few places serve good sandwiches. And I especially hated those that served BIg pieces of bread but SMALL tiny shreds of meat and filling. I really can’t go on all carbs diet. Finally someone who knows how to make sandwiches for meat eater who needs the apparent idea of a healthy meal.

Two of my favourites… Tuna Melt and Molten Grip.

Truly one of the best tuna sandwich in town. Lots of tuna mixed with sweet tiny chunks of apples and sultanas, add in cheddar cheese and lettuce, pair with a fresh cup of velvety cappuccino, a complete meal to me 😀

ImageHere is Molten Grip. I purposely took the first pic to show my other half how much vege I’m taking for my meal. No more eyes-rolling disapproval look.

Over-filled with chicken shreds, chicken ham, monterey cheese and lots of greens. Every bite a yummy bite. Head over to Stacks Sandwiches in Tropicana Mall for some real sandwiches.

Oh yes, they probably serves the best coffee in the mall too.

Coolest Cafe in Melaka


If you ever go to Melaka, you must not miss the coolest cafe in Melaka (probably in Malaysia). Mods Cafe = Cool. It is on the next parallel road of the main Jonker Street.


What you can see from the outside (and I don’t mean the girl)


It is a cafe you can visit when it is not mobile.

Machine, Vibiemme Lollo at the back of the van. Is this cool enough?

Coffee on a trip


Whenever I go for local trip, one of the biggest problem is finding good coffee. Considering most hotels served horrible coffee, what would be better than to Do It Yourself, the Aeropress way. And on a recent trip, that’s exactly what I do. Of course, I’m travelling within Malaysia.


3 important stuff: Fresh roasted coffee, Aeropress and a decent hand-grinder.


Morning task: 14g fresh roasted coffee into my Hario Slim Grinder


Morning exercise… phew… 2 minutes of hardword 😀 (no say I no do exercise, ok)


Inverted method if my preference. Now, have your fresh boiled water ready. Since did not bring thermometer, I’ll let the water sit for 30 seconds. (it was too hot, should let it sit for 45 seconds at least). Using the Aeropress the Inverted method allows for better control of the variables especially steeping time. And it looks cooler too 😀


Steep for 80 seconds. Reverse over and press down gently.

There you go. As good as it can get.

Assume you set the brewing temperature at 92 Celsius, the PID will do its work to maintain the temperature fluctuation  to say “91 to 93” degree. Yes, in our universe, maintaining thermal stabilty is one of the hardest thing to do in an open working environment.

  • Programmable Pre-infusion for each group
    Some people swears by Pre-infusion. Now you can play with them.
  • Pre-heating exchanger for brew boiler
    Another design to maintain thermal stability. (Told you they were important didn’t I)

What NOT to put into your grinder


Never ever put the following into your coffee grinder:
– kopi roasted with sugar and margarine
– flavoured coffee beans (vanilla, caramel and whatever)
– 3-in-1 instant coffee powder
– sugar
– syrup
-creamer
– ANYTHING other than pure 100% coffee beans.

Got this machine back for repair. Most likely, it’s OVER.

Would you like a cup of perfect espresso?


Nowadays, I shuddered whenever I hear someone say they will “make you a cup of prefect espresso”. Or worst, they gonna teach you to make that “perfect espresso”.

Is that the non-channeling, 28 seconds, 60ml double shot?

Or that 20 seconds, 25ml super ristretto?

Or that 5-seconds pre-infused, 8-seconds 6bar, 7-seconds 9bar and 5-seconds 3bar extraction?

Oh wait, did you mention 14g of coffee or was it 19.5g? Don’t forget the 93 Celsius water at the grouphead.

You got all that perfectly sorted out? Wait a min.. is that a conical burr grinder you are using? Wooohhh… careful with that clump… ahhh.. yes.. nicely distributed. I can feel the perfect espresso coming….

Then.. Stranger walked in. Prefect Espresso Guy set about making that perfect espresso.

Prefect Espresso Guy: So.. how’s the espresso?

Guy drinking it: Hmm… remind me again, what should I expect to find in this cup?

Guy making espresso: Espresso. You expect to find espresso in the cup. Hey, just kidding…. Ok, ok…. blueberry, floral, sweet with hints of chocolate perhaps.

Guy drinking it: Blueberry? Sweet? Chocolate?… Tada pun!!! And what’s this SOURNESS!

Guy making espresso: No..No.. supposed to be bright with lovely acidity. Never mind, let me make you a cappuccino. I’m sure you like.

— 3 minutes after —

Prefect Espresso Guy: Nice? Sweet and smooth?

Guy drinking cappuccino: Hmmm, very cold leh… Not hot enough. And so light. Cannot taste coffee. Make it stronger can ah? And I want sugar too.

By this time, Prefect Espresso Guy was about to cry thinking “But i’m making him a perfect espresso. Why he no like? I already make his milk extra hot at 58 Celsius. Why he say cold.”
